Business-owning families are more comfortable investing in other illiquid businesses and are also drawn to tangible assets, new research from Family Office Exchange suggests. Studying a group of 56 wealthy families, some of whom were business owners and others who were financial families, FOX found that the business owners had higher holdings of real estate and direct private equity . Business owners allocated 17 per cent and 12 per cent to real estate and private equity respectively, compared to 9 per cent and 4 per cent for financial families.

Family Office Exchange unveiled the theme of its latest workshop as “designing an effective family office. ” The event will run for a day and a half and cover best practices collected from the firm’s benchmarking and consulting projects over the year . “The ‘Family Office Blueprint’ is a detailed sequence of steps used to customize a family office to a particular family situation,” FOX said.

The event will be held in Coral Gables, FL, on May 1-2, and feature keynote speakers Howard Bragman and Dan Schawbel . A line-up of speakers will discuss the outlook for private business and wealth owners over the next decade, as well as strategies for addressing the advisor talent shortage and industry benchmarks.

Baird is planning to open a new wealth management office in the Northeast and has brought in Peter Miller from Wells Fargo to lead the effort. Miller is charged with recruiting experienced advisors in the Northeast to staff a new office there; the precise location of the new office has not been determined yet . Miller himself will be based at the firm’s St Louis office.

Family Office Exchange, a membership organization of single family offices and advisors, has appointed Christian Sulger-Büel as managing director for FOX International. He will be based in London . Sulger-Büel’s task is to expand and support the FOX network around the world, the organization said in a statement.
